Khuvgul lake trekking tour information

The Khovsgol to Darkhad trek is a remarkable adventure, designed and thoroughly tested by Eshar. Here are some highlights of the trek:

a. Khovsgol Nuur (Khovsgol Lake): Nestled at the foot of the eastern Sayan Mountains, this stunning lake is a true marvel. It spans 136 km in length, reaches a depth of 262 m, and sits at an elevation of 1,645 m above sea level. It holds an impressive 70% of Mongolia's freshwater and 0.4% of the world's freshwater. Don't miss the picturesque town of Hatgal at the southern end of the lake, where you can catch a glimpse of the majestic Khoridol Saridag peaks to the northwest.

b. Khoridol Saridag Mountains: The towering Khoridol Saridag mountain range stretches eastward to the Darkhad valley. With an average elevation of 3,000 m, some peaks remain snow-covered even during summer. These mountains serve as a natural barrier between the Khovsgol Lake valley and the Darkhad valley, guiding you from the east throughout the trek.

c. Sayan Mountains: Acting as Mongolia's northwestern border with Siberia, the Sayan mountains also form the western boundary of the Darkhad valley. With an average elevation of 2,500 m, these mountains are an extension of the Altay mountains, offering breathtaking views along your journey.

To reach the Khovsgol Lake to Darkhad trek, here are your transportation options:
  • Public Transportation: Public vans run daily from Moron to Hatgal. They depart when full and the journey takes approximately 1 hour.
  • Private Car/Hired Driver: For added convenience, you can hire a private car or driver in Moron. The cost per person should be around 30,000 Mongolian Tugrik.
The trek difficulty level is medium, requiring you to cross some creeks and have proper warm clothing. Navigation can also be considered medium, as there is a dirt road leading up to the pass, but beyond that, horse trails and topographic navigation become necessary. Make sure to check with the locals if the Jigelyg pass is open, as it may be closed due to late spring snow.

The best time to travel to Mongolia

The optimal time to visit Mongolia is from June to August. During this period, the landscapes are vibrant and verdant, offering a breathtaking sight. The weather is warm with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 28°C, making it an ideal time for outdoor activities and exploration. Mongolia's geographical location, being landlocked, results in an extreme continental climate characterized by significant temperature fluctuations. While the southern Gobi region can be quite hot during the summer months, it is also the time when rainfall is scarce in the country. In winter, temperatures plummet to an average of -2°C to -18°C, and can even drop as low as -30°C across Mongolia. Ulaanbaatar, the capital, holds the distinction of being the world's coldest capital city. Due to the severity of the winter season, travel to areas surrounding the city is advisable only between May and October. While it is possible to travel to Mongolia on the Trans-Siberian Railway throughout the year, certain...
